EyeSight Is a Stereo Pair, Not a Single Camera
Most driver-assist systems use one camera and infer distance. EyeSight uses two and measures it, the way your eyes do. That makes it capable, and it makes it unforgiving — both cameras must look through optically correct glass, and both must be aligned to each other and to the vehicle. A windshield with slight distortion in one camera window skews the depth calculation, and the system cannot tell that is happening.
Why We Push OEM Glass on EyeSight Cars
We are generally comfortable with good aftermarket glass. EyeSight is the exception. The optical requirements across the twin camera windows are strict enough that we recommend OEM on these vehicles as a matter of course, and we will tell you if we think your quote should be higher for that reason. Saving money on the glass and then failing calibration twice is not a saving.
Outback and Forester in the High Desert
Subarus here belong disproportionately to people who drive them where the pavement stops — the Franklins, Hueco Tanks, up into the Gila on long weekends. That is sharp rock, and sharp rock at moderate speed produces deep, narrow chips. Those repair well when fresh but propagate quickly when ignored, because depth matters more than width for how fast a break runs.
Scenic Drive and the Road Out of Town
Scenic Drive cuts along the face of the Franklins with a rock cut directly above the uphill lane, and material comes off that face continuously — more after monsoon rain loosens it. It is a short road with an outsized reputation among local glass shops. Subaru owners here also tend to be the ones actually leaving town on weekends, and the stretch of I-10 east toward the Guadalupes is open, fast and heavily trucked, which is a different hazard entirely from the city chip.

Why is EyeSight calibration more demanding than other systems?
Because it is stereo. Two cameras measuring depth by comparison must stay precisely aligned with each other. A single-camera system that drifts slightly degrades; a stereo pair that drifts slightly miscalculates distance, which is a more consequential error.
Do you insist on OEM glass for Subaru?
We strongly recommend it on EyeSight vehicles and we will explain why on your quote. On older Subarus without EyeSight, quality aftermarket glass is perfectly reasonable.
Can EyeSight be calibrated at my home?
Sometimes, but it needs level ground, measured target placement and controlled lighting. We assess your location when you book and will be straight with you if it is not suitable.
My Crosstrek picked up a deep chip on a trail — is it repairable?
Often, if it is fresh and outside the camera windows. Damage in the EyeSight viewing area is a different matter — even a good repair leaves optical distortion exactly where the cameras look, so that is a replacement.
