Autopilot Cameras and the Glass They Look Through
The forward camera cluster behind the mirror handles lane keeping, traffic-aware cruise and the rest of Autopilot. It looks through a defined window in the windshield, and optical quality in that patch is not negotiable. Tesla also handles some camera procedures through its own service channel, so part of doing this job honestly is telling you when something needs to go through Tesla rather than pretending otherwise.
Acoustic Lamination and Cabin Noise
Teslas are quiet because there is no engine to mask road noise, which makes the acoustic interlayer in the windshield more noticeable than it would be in a combustion car. Fit non-acoustic glass to a Tesla and the owner hears it immediately on the first highway drive. It is one of the few vehicles where getting the glass spec wrong is obvious within minutes rather than months.

Can you repair a chip on a Model 3 rather than replace the glass?
